South Sudan: Birth of a Republic
After 56 years of bloody conflict, Sudan has split into two. Its southern portion — Texas-size, oil-rich and primarily Christian and animist — has broken away from the Arab-populated northern region to form Africa’s 54th state. Daniella Zalcman a New York–based freelance photographer captured the joyful spirit that marked the new nation’s independence day.
