Who Needs a Hug?

In 1948, Harry S. Truman defeats his opponent Governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York by a whopping two million popular votes making this election the biggest upset in US presidential election history. Dewey had an enormous amount of support, and before the votes were tallied on election night, the Chicago Tribune went to print with an erroneous early edition claiming “DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN.” To help drum up support after poor polling numbers, Truman set out on a successful “whistle- stop” campaign across the US a few weeks before the election. He targeted undecided voters and showed them he was an outsider who would go head to head with what they perceived as an ineffective Congress.
